CalVet College Fee Waiver

Veterans of California benefit guide

The CalVet College Fee Waiver can waive mandatory tuition and system fees at any University of California, California State University or California Community College campus for eligible children, spouses and survivors of veterans.

Who may qualify

  • Children of veterans with a service-connected disability, or who died of a service-connected cause.
  • Spouses and surviving spouses of veterans who are totally disabled or died from a service-connected cause.
  • Dependents of California National Guard members killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.
  • Children and surviving spouses of Medal of Honor recipients and other qualifying groups.
  • The waiver has four plans (A through D). Some plans have income or age limits, and the student must meet California residency rules.

How to apply

  1. 1

Contact your County Veterans Service Office

Applications are filed through your local CVSO, who will help you choose the right plan and confirm eligibility.

  2. 2

    Gather documents

Bring the veteran's DD-214, the VA rating or death letter, proof of the relationship such as a birth or marriage certificate, and proof of income if your plan needs it.

  3. 3

Apply and get your award letter

Your CVSO submits the application to CalVet. Once approved, you receive an award letter.

  4. 4

Give the letter to your school

Take the award letter to the financial aid or veterans office at your college so fees are waived each term.

Good to know

  • The waiver covers tuition and system fees, not books, housing or parking.
  • Apply well before the term starts to avoid paying fees up front.
  • Waivers do not have to be paid back.
