California's state parks and America's national parks offer free or discounted passes for many veterans, war fighters and Gold Star families. Here is how to get them.

- California Distinguished Veteran Pass: free vehicle day use and camping at most state parks for California veterans with a 50% or higher service-connected disability, former prisoners of war, and Medal of Honor recipients.
- California Disabled Discount Pass: half-price day use and camping for people with a permanent disability.
- America the Beautiful Military Pass: free lifetime entry to national parks and federal recreation lands for veterans and Gold Star families.
- America the Beautiful annual Military Pass: free for current war fighters and their dependents.
How to apply
- 1
Pick the right pass
Use the list above. Veterans rated 50% or more should start with the Distinguished Veteran Pass.
- 2
Gather proof
For state passes, have your VA rating letter and California residency proof. For national parks, a VA ID card, veteran designation on your license, or DD-214 works.
- 3
Apply
Apply for state passes online or by mail with California State Parks. National park passes are free at any park entrance with your proof.
Good to know
- Passes are for the pass holder; bring the pass and ID every visit.
- Some special events, tours and concessions still charge a fee.
