California veterans seek to expand property tax exemptions

AB 2022 would exempt qualifying 100% disabled veterans and surviving spouses from a large share of their home's assessed value. The bill remains in the suspense file ahead of an Aug. 13 decision.
Today, Assembly Bill 2022 aimed to exempt qualifying 100% disabled veterans and surviving spouses from 50% of the entire home value, and in some cases — depending on the cost of the home and income — 100% of the property value.
During the committee hearing, support was given by public comments and there was no opposition from the public, but there was opposition from the Department of Finance. The bill remains in the suspense file for the Aug. 13 decision on whether it moves to a floor appearance or nothing at all.
